Fairest 9 is out!
Fairest #9, part 2 of the six part comic series I’m writing set in the Fables universe is out!
Featuring a cross-cultural magical-interspecies gay love story with art by Inaki Miranda, cover art by Adam Hughes.
(There’s an easter egg in the comic for my new novel, due mid-2013 too. Let me know if you spot it.)
We look back at Rapunzel’s first fateful steps as she’s shipwrecked on the shores of the Hidden Kingdom. She’s charmed by the Celestial Court, but there is political intrigue afoot and a forbidden love affair when Rapunzel falls in love with Tomoko, a kitsune fox spirit. Meanwhile Joel Crow and Jack of Fables get more than they bargained for in a seedy hostess club. And when Rapunzel is reunited with her former lover, she’s shocked at the monster Tomoko has become.
Futile Position wrote a very nice review about this issue:
“Beukes and Miranda have really found a sweet spot for pacing the story and crafting believable, interesting characters that really makes this an arc that you should pick up even if you haven’t been reading Fairest so far. Rapunzel is a layered character who is given a rich history through flashbacks to her previous time in Japan and – apparently – has stumbled into a war, although we do not yet know the extent of it. Rapunzel walks an interesting line between cold, calculated motivation and a strong emotional core that, for me, makes her a really fascinating character.”
